On 1st January 2012, Denmark took over the Presidency of the European Union.  The main educational and youth priorities of the new presidency are: 1) A partial political agreement among Member States on an outline for a new programme for Education and Training and Youth, to be adopted as part of the EU future budget for 2014-2020. The current programmes will expire at the end of 2013. The final version of the new programme and funding will be available in 2013. 2)The adoption of the first progress report under the strategic framework for European coordination in education and training, including the adoption of new priorities. 3) The creation of stronger links between education and employment in the EU, with the aims of improving links between education and the labour market, enhancing lifelong learning and flexibility in education and training.

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates among the member states every six months. Cyprus will take over the Presidency in July 2012.

The education system in Denmark is centrally managed by four different ministries and locally managed by the local authorities in conjunction with the schoolboards. Eurydice.

Na Dinamarca a escolha da escola foi consagrada em 1915, por meio de um sistema de cheque ensino, que permite aos pais escolherem a escola dos seus filhos, independentemente de serem escolas do Estado, das comunidades locais ou privadas.

O sistema educativo da Dinamarca é bem reconhecido, principalmente, pela enorme variedade e diversidade dos projectos educativos impulsionados pelo mecanismo da livre escolha.

No site oficial do ME da educação Dinamarquês, lê-se:

Na Dinamarca, há nove anos de escolaridade obrigatória. Compete aos pais a escolha:

1. se num estabelecimento publico

2. se numa escola privada

3. se em casa

O objectivo é que todas as escolas e locais de ensino que obedecem aos padrões de qualidade por Lei sejam reconhecidas e recebam financiamento público, independentemente da sua ideologia, religião, etnicidade e motivação para o seu estabelecimento.

Desde 2001 que foram introduzidos mecanismos para o aperfeiçoamento da liberdade e autonomia da escola com vista a melhorar a qualidade no sistema publico. Os resultados Pisa demonstraram os resultados positivos destas medidas e, assim, em Dezembro de 2010, foram introduzidas metas mais ambiciosas para 2020:

a) todas as crinças devem saber ler no ano 2 (aos 8 anos);

b) antecipação das aprendizagens do ano 9  (15 anos) para o ano 8 (14 anos);

c) redução do numero de alunos com necessidades educativas especiais;

d) melhorar a qualificações científicas dos professores;

e) reformar e reforçar as regras de acesso de professores;

f) clarificação de objectivos de cada escola e maior transparência nos resultados.

No debate nacional sobre a A Escolha da Escola, verificamos que existe alguma confusão entre o direito de escolha, que é o direito dos pais e das famílias, e o risco das escolas fazerem selecção de alunos.
